Description

The NYS Institute seeks a histotechnician for its Department of Developmental Neurobiology. The position is salary grade 22, hiring salary: $75,340. Generous benefit package, PEF union benefits, healthcare, vision and dental.

The studies of two groups of neuropathologists, neuroscientists, and morphometrists are concentrated on detection and characterization of (a) global pattern of brain developmental abnormalities in individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, Phelan-McDermid syndrome, Trisomy 21/Down's syndrome, Batten disease and other developmental disorders; and

(b) Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. Histologists of the centralized service lab provide highly standardized brain hemisphere samples for studies of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders.

Requirements

Expertise in brain tissue preservation for detection/characterization of age-associated changes and type and dynamics of neurodegenerative changes in Alzheimer disease and other brain degenerative disorders.

Studies underway require brain hemisphere fixation, dehydration and embedding of coronal 20mm thick hemispheric slabs in paraffin for cutting 9 μm thick hemispheric sections, embedding in polyethylene glycol for cutting 50 μm thick serial sections and embedding in celloidin for cutting100 μm thick coronal hemispheric sections. These serial gapless sections are used for a broad spectrum of histochemical, immunocytochemical stainings, and unbiased stereological studies leading to statistical modeling of developmental and neurodegenerative disorders.
